Le Hameau de l’Argenté Nursing Home (EHPAD), Mont-de-Marsan

The proposal by the architects at AIA Life Designers for the Le Hameau de l’Argenté nursing home is the result of a collaborative process informed by the challenges of aging and “aging well,” themes that have been explored for many years by the AIA Foundation for Architecture, Health, and Environment.

These studies encompass issues related to the health and well-being of both caregivers and residents, while also rethinking the role of nursing homes within the urban landscape. The goal is to integrate these facilities as active contributors to city life. Our architects strive to design projects that build connections with the urban environment, promote intergenerational contact, and combat social exclusion and isolation among the elderly.

In terms of building layout, the design team favored an architectural language that evokes individual houses, in order to create a warm and familiar environment. Regarding the operational concept of the nursing home, particular attention was given to the degree of privacy in the spaces offered. It was essential that each resident be able to, at their own discretion, isolate themselves, reflect, socialize, converse, play, go outside, or welcome guests with ease.

Finally, through the spatial layout and organization—both indoors and outdoors—our architects focused on the porosity of the design. They aimed to create continuity between public space and the nursing home, thus encouraging smooth and natural interactions between the two.
