Renovation of the Hôtel de Broglie, Paris

Renovation of the Hôtel de Broglie: Offices for Members of the National Assembly

The transformation of the Hôtel de Broglie by AIA Life Designers represents a remarkable metamorphosis, skillfully combining the historical richness of this architectural gem with modern workspace requirements.

This property complex, consisting of three buildings constructed over a span of three centuries, has undergone a unique evolution — from its initial construction in 1720 to the office buildings erected on the same site in 1921. The Hôtel de Broglie stands out due to its multifaceted history, and it is this very diversity that forms the foundation of its renewal.

The historic part of the building, with its centuries-old façades and roofs steeped in history, is listed as a historic monument and reflects its strong heritage value. AIA Life Designers committed to a heritage enhancement approach while anticipating the current and future needs of the Members of the National Assembly. The strategy adopted aims to create an optimal working environment for parliamentarians, their staff, political groups, and services.

The challenges of this transformation were numerous. The façades and roofs of the historic section were carefully restored in close collaboration with Deshoulières Jeanneau studio. The listed salons arranged in succession on the lower level of Building H display decor resulting from successive modifications and stylistic blends. The restoration of the salons, based on the reference state of the Hôtel d’Haussonville in 1860, was not intended to fully replicate their original condition, but rather to highlight the specific typology of the hôtel particulier’s layout. These spaces also needed to balance heritage features with their new functional purposes. The protected rooms now host temporary collective uses such as dining areas, multipurpose zones, meeting rooms, and a tea room. Special attention was given to restoring decor according to each room’s stylistic characteristics, while carefully integrating technical systems and acoustic treatments to maintain both harmony and user comfort. The project thus demonstrates a balanced approach between heritage preservation and functional adaptation.

The renovation process also included compliance with safety standards, thermal improvements, enhanced acoustic and lighting performance, as well as the complete rehabilitation of circulation paths and interior spaces to create ergonomic, functional workspaces. AIA Life Designers’ interior architecture teams supported the project owner in designing the furniture, signage, and overall ambiance.

This large-scale project extended beyond the building itself. The main courtyard and garden — silent witnesses to bygone eras — have been given new life through a carefully orchestrated revitalization. As a result, the Hôtel de Broglie, after its transformation, stands not only as a functional, modern workplace but also as a living testament to history — a bridge between the past and the future, at the very heart of the National Assembly.
