Santé Atlantique Clinic, Saint-Herblain – France’s 2nd Best Private Hospital

Formed by the consolidation of the Jeanne-d’Arc, Saint-Augustin, and Atlantique Polyclinic facilities (part of the Elsan group) into a single healthcare hub, the Santé Atlantique Clinic in Saint-Herblain is now one of the top-rated private hospitals in France. The new facility brings together approximately 1,200 healthcare and wellness professionals.

The program and architectural concept reflect the client’s objective to create a coherent, functional, and welcoming healthcare complex—enhancing care pathways, interconnecting services, and optimizing shared support functions.

The project was developed in three main phases :

Restructuring of the existing Claude Bernard building, including :

Partial reconfiguration of the lower ground floor to accommodate a central pharmacy and an adapted central kitchen. Ground floor redesign to reorganize and expand the surgical unit, adding two operating rooms and an endoscopy department.

A 29,450 m² extension to the existing building, extending toward Boulevard de La Baule. This 400-meter-long structure forms the backbone of the healthcare hub and includes :

Central Building: houses consultation facilities, imaging services on the lower ground floor, and staff dining on the ground floor.

Vision Institute: an ophthalmology consultation center.

La Baule Building: home to the Hand Institute, a biology lab, a dialysis center, an 18-room operating block, outpatient services, inpatient wards, and various technical and logistical spaces.

Construction of a 450-space parking garage, reserved for staff during working hours and open to the public after hours.

To support future growth, the project includes provisions for expansion.

Architecturally, the buildings are tiered and segmented. The lower volumes of the Central Building and Vision Institute integrate harmoniously with the surrounding residential neighborhood, while taller elements (up to five stories) mark the Boulevard de La Baule frontage with two prominent corner structures—visual markers of the health campus. The facade’s color scheme evokes the sea in all its shifting tones, aiming for a “glaz” palette, a mix of blue, green, gray, and silver.

The landscaped site enhances the continuity of the Val de la Chézine’s green corridor, preserving and extending the natural qualities of the area.
