Parking Facility, Ferney-Voltaire

#Energy: This 450-space silo car park, designed to be reversible into office space, has been classified as a “Sustainable City Demonstrator.”
On the energy front, it integrates a central energy production facility that feeds the district heating network. This plant operates using waste heat recovery from CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), supplemented by geothermal energy and a backup gas boiler.

The energy storage system developed by AIA Ingénierie aligns with the 2030 energy transition goals, addressing the critical issue of energy storage and management.

For the past five years, AIA Ingénierie has been developing an integrated engineering approach to storage systems, interconnected with the building’s needs. The innovative storage solution is based on an adiabatic compressed air energy storage (CAES) system, which allows energy to be stored and then returned in four forms—electricity, heat, cooling, and compressed air—with a total energy efficiency rate exceeding 85%. The Volt’Air project would serve as an urban demonstrator of this pioneering compressed air energy storage technology, reaching Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7.

#Bio-based Materials: The facility is equipped with two elevators and rises over four levels. The superstructure is composed of a timber post/mixed wood-beam system, resting on a concrete and glass base that is elevated and traversed by a public passageway. This lightweight structure allows for wide spans while reducing the carbon footprint. The openwork façade is also made of timber.
