A project true to Marie Curie’s spirit of innovation, dedicated to advancing patient care and supporting research.
With a rich century-long history, the Curie Institute stands as a leading force in the fight against cancer. In 2010, it expanded to Saint-Cloud, establishing one of its three main hubs—alongside its Paris and Orsay locations—for care, research, and teaching.
At the Saint-Cloud site, the extension project of the existing hospital addresses key challenges in improving both patient care and research capacity. Given the outdated condition of part of the site, the decision was made to construct new facilities on adjacent land and to renovate the existing hospital. Upon completion, the hospital will double in size and include 3,500 m² of newly built laboratories and 148 brand-new inpatient beds and care stations. The hospital will also benefit from clearer organization and ease of navigation, thanks to an architectural approach focused on care and healing. Additionally, the aim is to establish the hospital as a symbolic landmark within the city of Saint-Cloud.
Clearly visible from the train station, the entrance building on Rue Dailly remains the hospital’s public face. Fully renovated, the ground floor now features a clean, glazed façade offering high visibility both day and night.
Pedestrian access is organized along three main routes: to the general reception, the Patient House, and the research building. In addition to the existing 14-space parking lot, 15 additional spaces have been created for ambulances and taxis underground, along with a drop-off area on Rue Dailly. Logistics access remains on Rue Latouche.
Previously, the site’s fragmented architecture reflected a century of modifications—between 1910 and 2006—without an overarching design vision. To counter this patchwork of styles, AIA Life Designers chose to create a visual framework unifying all parts of the campus. The development of a new consultation hub and a technical platform also helps streamline workflows and enhance the continuum between care and research, benefiting both staff and patients. The new building, constructed on the site of demolished structures and adjoining the existing facility, spans seven floors with a total area of 17,555 m². It includes a pharmacy, laboratories, a radiotherapy unit (with a new bunker supplementing the four existing ones), an expanded nuclear medicine department, consultation rooms, outpatient facilities, inpatient rooms, iratherapy rooms, and a data center.
This ambitious extension and renovation of the Curie Hospital in Saint-Cloud is aligned with the vision of its founder, Marie Curie. By supporting compassionate and effective patient care alongside optimal working conditions for staff, the project by AIA Life Designers reinforces the Curie Institute’s role as a leader in cancer research.
