AIA Life Designers has been selected as the winner of the project management contract for the master plan of the Georges-Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture (CNAC-GP).
Following two years of competitive dialogue with the project owners (CNAC, Oppic, WSP) and the mobilization of around forty team members from our ten fields of expertise (architecture, engineering, environment, etc.), we have developed a committed project for this monument of modern architecture designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers.
“It is with great respect and humility that we approach this project—each of us has a memory of Beaubourg: the library, the bookstore, the exhibition spaces…” says the team, deeply connected to this cultural landmark.
Although remarkably well preserved and highly efficient in its operations, the building, delivered in 1977, requires a highly technical and surgical overhaul. Over the past 50 years, priorities and standards have significantly evolved. Today, environmental awareness calls for greater energy efficiency, careful material selection, and a deeper consideration of a building’s impact at every scale.
Safety, accessibility, and maintenance standards in such multidisciplinary cultural facilities have also drastically changed. To meet these evolving requirements and fulfill the ambitions outlined by the project owners, the AIA Life Designers teams have designed a comprehensive plan: asbestos removal, air purification, fire stability, structural audits, complete overhaul of electrical and heating systems, environmental design choices… A second life for the next 40 years.
“What made us strong was building a lasting core team for the project and staying true to our original strategy. We didn’t aim to win by offering a low-cost proposal, but rather to align the necessary resources with our strategic approach and ultimate vision for the project,” states Alain Popinet, the project’s lead.
