Georges Vallerey Olympic Swimming Pool: A Rediscovered Modernity
The renovation of the Georges Vallerey swimming pool in the 20th arrondissement of Paris is a complex rehabilitation project led by AIA Life Designers. The aim is to balance key objectives : adapting the facility to modern usage while restoring a monument of architectural and sporting history.
Originally built for the 1924 Summer Olympics, where swimming, diving, and water polo events were held, the pool was renovated in 1986 by architect Roger Taillibert. He introduced an innovative retractable roof, restored the Olympic pool (21 meters wide and 50 meters long), and modified the concrete facades. This “island-building” was surrounded by eight turrets housing staircases, along with narrow decks and spectator stands on all four sides. Nearly a century later, the aging facility, designated as a training site (for swimming, marathon swimming, and triathlon swimming) for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, required a major overhaul.
The construction began in September 2022 with an initial four-month phase focused on clearing and decontamination in targeted areas. The process concluded in March 2024. Damaged elements such as tiles and partitions were removed, while in January 2023, preparations began for dismantling the existing roof structure above the pool hall and installing scaffolding on the stands. These scaffolds served as work platforms for clearing high-level components (gutters, lighting, ventilation) and the metal framework, which was treated with anti-rust coating and repainted white. Concrete issues affecting columns and beams were addressed case by case, and the pool’s non-watertight gutters were rebuilt. A safety net was installed under the curved roof to facilitate its removal, along with the dismantling of the polycarbonate panels and wooden framework. The restoration of the retractable roof—an architectural innovation that allows swimmers to enjoy natural light and fresh air—was a central objective of the project.
Another key goal was to create welcoming, comfortable, and safe circulation spaces that comply with modern hygiene and accessibility standards. To promote sustainable construction practices, an upcycling approach was implemented: each beam from the dismantled framework was removed from the site and delivered to Mathis’ workshop. Selected pieces were then sent to the interior carpentry company Bonnardel, which repurposed part of the wood to craft furniture for the entrance hall (reception desk) and pool area (benches), as well as signage supports. Meanwhile, Mathis prefabricated 12 new arches and various structural elements for the new retractable roof. These were made of laminated Douglas fir from eco-certified forests in the Vosges and Jura regions, transported by truck, and assembled on-site. The renovation of the entrance hall also improved lighting, acoustics, and visitor reception.
Additionally, the project brought the facility up to current standards, particularly concerning water and air treatment, ensuring a healthy environment and sustainable resource use. One unique aspect of the building is that its pool is elevated above ground level, accessible from the second floor. This design allows for inspections and maintenance from underneath. Spectator seating, arranged along the pool’s east and west sides, spans two levels, with access from the third floor. Improving internal circulation for both visitors and staff was a major focus. Concurrently, a façade renovation was undertaken, including repainting the building’s exterior. The main concrete façade was simply cleaned.
The renovation of the Georges Vallerey swimming pool successfully combined heritage preservation with modern functionality, providing Parisians with a high-quality sports and leisure facility.
